Cut out the 24-gauge brass and copper leaflet units and saw-pierce their openings. Sand and finish all edges.

Coil the 14-gauge brass stem wire and gently form it into a graceful taper.

File a U-shaped depression in one end of the wire. Then form the stem wire into a D-shape for the bail on one end. File the other end to a taper. Clean-finish the wire and pickle it.

With round-nose pliers, gently bend each leaflet into a U-shape, matching the diameter of the U bend to the gauge of the stem wire. A tight fit is essential.

Flux all of the units on all sides and set them in order on the soldering table. Position the innermost leaflet on the fluxed stem wire and solder it in place. In the same operation, solder the D-bend of the stem wire closed. Quench the work in water, but do not pickle yet. Solder on the next two leaflets in order, in the same way, focusing the torch on the thick stem wire to avoid melting the leaflets. Pickle after groups of 3 leaflets are soldered in place, brass brush and clean the work, reflux it, and continue soldering the leaflets on, one at a time, pickling after 3 have been added. Vary the size and the metal colors down the stem wire.

Pickle the work well, rinse, and clean-finish, patinate as desired and then bring the raised areas of the piece to a high polish with rouge on a hard felt buff.
